Thing have been pretty quiet on my end for the last month or so but I was able to escape to Flagstaff Arizona a couple weekends ago & I have been excited to share the experience with y’all. Flagstaff has quickly taken a huge spot in my heart, it has that old, small town feel without running out of things to keep you busy and hip establishments to pass away time in.
The town was never on my radar until I did a quick search to see what cities would be in driving proximity from Utah, I knew I needed to take on another solo road trip and didn’t care where I ended up, so once the idea of Flagstaff came up I started looking into what the city had to offer.
I don’t have suggestions on where to stay simply because this should depend on the type of getaway you are looking for, it is the perfect town to set up camp, book an airbnb, motel or throw down some cash on a nicer chain hotel. I think that is part of the charm, it hits the needs for those looking for an outdoor adventure as well as those wanting to hit the town. Whether you are a regular outdoorsman or a total city goer, here are your must stops in Flagstaff.
Where to Eat
123 S San Francisco St #5
Heather, owner is absolutely amazing, this tea shop is her passion and that shows in the quality of her tea. She spent years as a cook/baker and offers the most wonderful selection of muffins, truffles and other goodies made fresh by her for the shop. The environment is so inviting with a fireplace and community coloring book, I could’ve sipped on my chai and enjoyed the atmosphere all day. Tucked off a main street it feels like your own secret find. I plan to hit up Flagstaff Tea Company very first when I make my way back to the city.

Now THIS is the place to go for some real good BBQ, the ultimate soul food. The hyped environment simply promotes a good time. I am not generally someone who wants a heavy meal while I am on vacation but I would take a plate from Satchmo’s any day. I was able to taste their BBQ pulled pork as well as this gorgeous jambalaya shown below and I am convinced there is nothing less than superior on this menu.

I’m pretty sure I needed an extra day in Flagstaff just to taste more selections on their menu. I went for breakfast and had the best omelet of my life with an intensely fresh cup of fruit. The sweeter side of their menu looks delish, their lunch and dinner menu looks delish, their cafe menu looks delish & their atmosphere is so hip and bright.
What to do
1400 W Mars Hill Rd
This little gem cannot go un-seen. And “little” was certainly not the right adjective to describe this place. I have never visited an observatory with so much space, and so many buildings with different telescopes. The history is rich and the employees are so passionate about their work, you could strike up a genuine conversation about the observatory with any of them. I could’ve spent the entire night there, I saw more stars in the sky than I have in years.
Fort Tuthill County Park
This was the most zipline course I have ever done in my life. After thorough training, you are able to go through the course at your own pace. Anyone who loves the thrill of a good outdoor adventure absolutely cannot miss a day making their way through this course. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, so even for those a little weary, there won’t be a moment that you don’t feel 100% secure. There aren’t a lot of activities that give me a total adrenaline rush, but this did it for me, that feeling is priceless.

That’s right, same address as the MIX that I covered above. Old town shops is a handful of independently owned shops as well as a few rad restaurants and a super bomb, old town feel atmosphere. I am always an advocate for visiting historic downtown in any city you hit and Flagstaff was no exception. It had the most beautiful feel and Old Town Shops is the perfect addition to the city. It was cozy enough to keep that historic feel but with a broad range of shops from outdoorsy to edgy to fashion forward it hits all your shopping needs.
Who’s ready to pack up and make their way to Flagstaff? I am thinking it deserves a second appearance on Modern Wanderer in 2018!
